Future of eSports in Bangladesh

eSports” is a very popular term amongst the teenagers nowadays. Despite being a fast-growing industry, it is quite underrated in the current society. The majority of the people think that playing video games is a waste of time. However, it is not true. If someone is truly passionate about playing video games a living, eSports can be a very promising career option. With eSports quickly becoming a billion dollar industry, more interesting jobs are being available beyond gaming.

There is a stigma that video games makes people more violent. Actually, a study conducted by The American Psychological Association finds no evidence connecting between violent games and aggressive behavior. On the contrary, a neuroscience study found that 3D immersive gaming can improve memory. Most people think you can be in the eSports industry only by being a professional gamer. But that is a myth. According to Bryan(2022), there are jobs in:

·         Management

·         Operations

·         Sales

·         Event Planning

·         Coaching

·         Travel Agent

·         Social Media Coordinating

·         Content Creation

In the west, there are many universities offering degrees in eSports for example, University of California Irvine, the University of Texas, The Ohio State University etc. They even have advanced research programs. Which gets us down to the fact that it’s not a waste of time to consider eSports a potential career choice.

The recent years had both ups and downs for the Bangladeshi eSports scene. A1 eSports, a Bangladeshi PUBG mobile team generated quite a fame in the particular community. They came in 3rd position in the PUBG mobile global competition. They earned a huge amount of money and even donated a portion of their earning to charity. But they are not getting the respect they deserve. During a local tournament organized by a player in their roster, the policed barged in and arrested many players from the tournament in suspicion of stealing mobile phones. This is a very disrespectful and unacceptable behavior considering the fact that there was nothing illegal going on. It is really embarrassing to treat a representative of our country on an international level this poorly.

Unemployment is a major problem in Bangladesh. I think that introducing eSports as a career choice will help the youth greatly as it will open many new job opportunities. Currently Bangladesh has a reputation internationally only in PUBG mobile. There are other popular and trendy games like VALORANT, League of Legends, Overwatch, Counter Strike: Global Offensive etc. All of these combined, there is a huge potential of eSports in Bangladesh
